Do you offer internships for college students?

Our internships are for students who are enrolled in school and would be returning to school for at least one semester or quarter following their internship.

If you haven’t already done so, you should also contact your school’s career center to help you explore your options.

How can I follow up on the status or progress of my application?

There are a couple of ways to follow up on your application throughout the recruiting process. If you have recently submitted an application:

  • Email your recruiter but keep in mind that we receive a high volume of resumes, especially during the fall recruiting season so it might take us a bit to respond.
  • If you’ve already gone through a formal interview, follow up with your campus recruiter who may be able to provide status information.

If you’ve submitted your application and are waiting to hear from us, rest assured that our recruiters are working hard to find the right fit. Recruiting keeps your resume on file and will reach out when we believe we have found a good fit based on your interests and qualifications.

How do I get in touch with a recruiter?

Visit our meet your recruiter page to search for your recruiter. There you can reach out to your recruiter with any questions.

How many interviews will I have, and how long will they last?

You can expect to meet with three to six people for one hour each. How many people and for how long will depend on how much information the interviewers need from you to make a good decision for you and Microsoft. So try to get a good night’s sleep—it can be a long day!

I am interested in interviewing someone at Microsoft for school, how do I set that up?

Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t have a specific program to address your request. However, we recognize the importance of encouraging young people to become interested in technology and have several youth programs to help you.

I applied for a summer internship but I haven’t heard back. What does this mean?

Generally, we fill our summer internship positions by mid-May. However, we do keep all internship applications on file. So even if you haven’t heard by mid-May, we’ll still have your application in case an opportunity that matches your skills and interests becomes available.

I missed you on my campus, what is the best way to get in touch with a recruiter?

Our recruiters would love to hear from you! The best way to get in touch is by finding your recruiter’s information. We’re happy to help and are looking forward to meeting you.

I live outside of the United States, but I want to intern in Redmond. Can I still apply?

Yes you can, and we look forward to reviewing your application! Get started by completing your application today.

If I receive an offer, how long will I have to make a decision?

Your campus recruiter will work with you to determine a reasonable timeframe, but typically you’ll be asked to make a decision within a week (intern candidates) or two (full-time candidates).

May I bring my significant other?

You’re more than welcome to bring a companion, but we can only reimburse travel expenses for you.

What degree should I have if I want to work at Microsoft?

We don’t require specific courses of study. A degree in computer science (CS) may be helpful. While we don’t require this degree, it typically provides the kind of experience we need. Solid experience in the CS field, work on CS projects outside your regular course work, and a great GPA are also nice to have on your resume. For any position, regardless of your degree, we look at the skills you’ve gained through your education and experience.

Degree programs other than computer science also may give you the knowledge and training we’re looking for. We also look for graduates with skills in areas such as finance, business, and marketing. Most of these positions require a college degree.

What should I do while I’m in town?

Have fun! Customize your visit—whether you are into the outdoors and adventure, or prefer a great café and cozying up with a good local magazine—there is a lot to do in and around the Puget Sound. Make time to experience the area; it’s part of the fun of the whole interview experience!

When do you accept applications for internships?

We’re always accepting applications for our internships. That said, we do suggest applying earlier in the school year as opposed to later. Recruiting generally accomplishes most of its hiring in the fall for the following summer, so you’re encouraged to apply during the fall instead of waiting until the spring.
