Role Purpose

At Rare we're passionate about building the best teams and developing the most exciting, innovative projects. That's why we are excited to announce that we're looking for a Principal Animator to join our team. We're seeking someone who has the experience and the passion to work on a AAA game experience. You must have very strong animation abilities and the ability to work autonomously, and not be afraid to drive the vision of animation in the game with your own input.

Key Accountabilities

•      Create outstanding animations that set a high quality bar for the rest of the team.

•      Help others to consistently reach that bar by mentoring and guiding junior or less experienced colleagues.

•      Contribute to the setup of suitable pipelines and workflows, including prototyping, documenting processes and helping to specify, test, and drive quality tools created by the Technical Art and Engineering teams.

•      Keep abreast of new trends and new technologies in the industry and how they could be applied to improve the output of the Animation team in the future.

Required Skills and Experience

General Competencies:  

•      Experience with cutting-edge techniques and technology related to animation and a strong desire to stay ahead of the game.

•      Ability to proactively self-organise and prioritise work for yourself and others.

•      Excellent communication skills.

•      Ability to contribute to guiding and mentoring groups of junior Artists, contractors and outsourcers.

Artistic Competencies:

•      Ability to work with the Art Director and Lead Animator to deliver the game to the artistic vision.

•      Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to use existing knowledge to rapidly improvise solutions.

•      Ability to contribute to the stylistic development of animation systems as well as their place within the wider game.

•      Comfortable at all stages of game development, from concept through pre-production to production.

Technical Competencies:

•      Several years' game development experience that includes seeing projects from beginning to end.

•      Ability to contribute to the technical design of animation systems, and to work closely with the Technical Art and Technical Animation teams to help drive elegant tools and solutions.

•      Excellent knowledge of Maya or other 3D creation packages.

•      Comfortable working with (and around) bespoke, in-development tool sets along with more mature engines and pipelines.
