Risk Specialist

The Anti-Piracy Services team at Microsoft is responsible for driving development and implementation of Anti-Piracy Technologies, Supply Chain Security policies and practices, and protecting Microsoft’s revenue by preventing program fraud.   The Channel Security Risk Manger position is responsible for driving implementation of initiatives to strengthen piracy and theft prevention for Microsoft’s physical and digital channels.

Deliverables, Tasks and Success Criteria:

•      Prioritizes (and deprioritizes) risk-assessment information appropriately in order to articulate and provide insight into specific risks.

•      Establishes a communication framework with proper escalation channels in order to provide timely, consistent, audience-appropriate communication to clients and stakeholders.

•      Manages projects or programs with elevated levels of risk and complexity.

•      Uses his or her business function, support/service, and product and risk perspective to assimilate information from multiple sources, and to identify key drivers, variables, trends, and business scenarios in order to inform business decisions.

•      Draws from a well-developed set of experiences and analytical tools and methodologies to assess risks.

•      Manages change across multiple stakeholders to ensure high-quality implementation.

•      Implements controls, determines the effectiveness of controls, and sets metrics for one domain of risk for a business function, support/service, or product.

•      Uses independent judgment and discretion to demonstrate the use of technologies, processes, tools, and methodologies in the design and delivery of solutions, and to support customer engagements.

•      Plans for near-term reporting and information needs related to risks.

•      Provides input into the requirements and architecture for business management systems. Builds a business case for long-term, cross-business solutions that incorporates the impact of solutions and recommends ways to mitigate risk.

•      Manages projects or programs with elevated levels of risk and complexity.

•      Manages the schedule in order to incorporate internal dependencies and cross-team dependencies, assign appropriate resources, create logical work break-down structures, identify critical-path elements, process change requests, and measure progress against the plan.

•      Establishes project governance in order to facilitate, track, log, and implement decisions.

•      Procures and manages resources appropriately, provides accurate risk projections, and identifies and communicates variance promptly.

•      Uses his or her knowledge of both the business and its risks, and advises on the best path to process changes that are required for the future state.

•      Communicates the strategy and the desired future state in terms of how required changes will improve key business metrics.

•      Establishes a broadening network in order to influence his or her area of responsibility to shift toward the future state.

•      Participates in cross-group discussion in order to influence change.

•      Drives cultural shifts with direct stakeholders in order to create readiness for change and influence behavior.


•      3 – 5 years of related experience

•      Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related technical field or the equivalent 3+ years of relevant experience

•      2+ years of project management experience with a preference in technical project management roles.

•      2+ years of product security experience

•      Write, speak and read fluently in English

•      5+ years experience with large IT system architecture, big data concepts, user authentication technologies are required

•      Must pass a security background check

•      Demonstrated understanding of future state definition and roadmap development of anti-piracy controls.

•      Demonstrated understanding of business architecture and operating models while considering impact of proposed controls solutions.

•      Demonstrated understanding of information architecture, data management processes and practices, and data quality, and technical understanding of large platform architecture and threat vectors.

•      Required: Bachelor’s Degree (B.S. /B.A.)

•      Preferred: MBA

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

•      Anti-Piracy, Product Release Security, and/or Microsoft Supply Chains  

•      Ability to lead large virtual teams, influence without express authority, and drive to results in ambiguous environment and present to levels of management.  

•      Experience with channel and/or partners, software plus services and/or emerging business programs desirable

•      Excellent oral and written business communications skills

•      Ability to communicate effectively and summarize key issues/risks both verbally and in written context

•      Ability to engage leadership in conversations to ensure collaborative and effective resolution

•      Follow through to completion on projects including all written reports, stakeholder meetings, management updates, team updates and closure of any outstanding corrective actions

•      Agile approach to change within the organization, while continuing to deliver on main-line business commitments

•      Identification and deployment of best practices
