Principal Applied Scientist- Cortana Research

Join the new applied science team in Cortana and help shape the future of Microsoft’s personal digital assistant, and AI practice more broadly. We are looking for an experienced applied scientist, with a strong track record in shipping research in products, to deliver compelling new scenarios for Cortana and create fans for the product. The successful candidate will be a member of a newly-formed team responsible for researching, incubating, and developing new algorithms and experiences for Cortana - in close partnership with the Cortana design, program management, and engineering teams. Areas of focus will include, but are not limited to, productivity, vision, dialog, emotion, memory, and intelligence. Modes of engagement with Cortana will span many devices, including phones, PCs, and speakers - all are in scope for potential projects for the applied science team. The primary focus of the position is on delivering research products in Cortana. Members of the applied science team will also contribute to elevating awareness of Cortana in the scientific community and beyond through presentations, publications, and other outlets (e.g., blogs, press interviews). We are looking for candidates who are smart and creative, but are also self-driven, curious, and comfortable with ambiguity. The successful applicant will work closely with others in Cortana, and colleagues from across Microsoft. As a core member of the applied science team, they will own a set of Cortana experiences, leading (or co-leading, with counterparts in other Cortana teams) their design and implementation from inception, through research and development, and into the product. Candidates should have a deep understanding of software system principles, and the ability to lead and partner with others to ship developed technology.

REQUIRED:

o PhD in statistics or computer science (concentration in one of the following: machine learning, data mining, natural language processing, dialog systems, information retrieval, or human-computer interaction)

o 8+ years of experience in developing or applying predictive analytics/statistical modeling/data mining/machine learning algorithms, especially at scale.

o 8+ years of software design and development skills/experience.

PREFERRED:

o 8+ years of professional experience developing product level algorithms, with a proven track record of successfully shipping applied research to production.

o Proficiency in relevant tools, e.g., Cosmos, TLC, Azure ML, .NET, C#, SQL, and Python.

o Experience with developing intelligent assistant technology.

o Excellent problem solving and data analysis skills.

o Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

o Strong collaboration skills, both within-team and cross-team.

o Experience with leading or participating in successful incubation projects.
