<b>Overview</b><br><div dir="ltr"><p>We are building the Intelligent Conversation and Communications Cloud (IC3) — powering Microsoft's first-party real-time conversation and streaming products, notably Teams, with reliable, high-quality audio/video calling, meetings, and events at hundreds of millions of users. The Media Services team owns the highly scalable cloud media servers behind enabling the real time and streaming scenarios. We are seeking a Principal Software Engineering Manager to lead a team building mission-critical, low-latency media systems and to drive the next generation of AI-powered media experiences.</p><p>Potential candidate leads disciplined use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools across the software development lifecycle (SDLC), integrating Responsible AI practices and recommending improvements. Guides collaboration with stakeholders to confirm user requirements and leverages feedback channels for design improvements. Owns and leads architecture discussions, manages design documents, evaluates new technologies, and reviews complex designs. Guides teams in creating test strategies, incorporating security testing, and leveraging AI tools for test automation. Leads managing dependencies and collaborates across teams to align schedules and resolve conflicts. Guides development process, ensuring extensible, maintainable, and secure code using best practices. Acts as an expert in troubleshooting, applying least-access principles, and conducting incident retrospectives. Leads code reviews, ensuring adherence to best practices. Drives project planning, anticipates future goals, and ensures compliance with security requirements. Guides experimentation, deployment, live site maintenance, and incident response, ensuring safe and efficient operations. Integrates telemetry to monitor system behavior and improves designs based on analysis. Guides development tool selection and continuous integration in production. Ensures compliance with security and regulatory standards, mentors on learning and development, and advocates for best practices and security-informed engineering. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.</p></div><br><br><b>Responsibilities</b><br><div dir="ltr"><p>We are seeking a Principal Software Engineering Manager to lead a team building mission-critical, low-latency media systems and to drive the next generation of AI-powered media experiences. As a manager for this team, you’ll get to immerse yourself in cutting edge technology at scale and enable rich collaborative experiences for our customers.</p><ul><li><p><strong>Requirements</strong> — Guide stakeholder partnerships to determine user requirements within and across teams; build continuous feedback loops measuring customer value, usage patterns, and actionable metrics.</p></li><li><p><strong>Design &amp; architecture</strong> — Lead architecture and design discussions for products/solutions; own design decisions; ensure system architecture meets security and compliance requirements; set clear plans for testing and quality.</p></li><li><p><strong>Coding &amp; quality</strong> — Guide teams to produce extensible, maintainable code; define quality metrics, coding patterns, and review standards; lead by example in code-writing and review practices.</p></li><li><p><strong>Dependencies</strong> — Lead identification and management of cross-team and back-end dependencies; enable cross-team communication and resolve conflicts.</p></li><li><p><strong>Implement &amp; deliver</strong> — Drive multiple groups' project, release, and resourcing plans; break long-term vision into milestones; own deployment safety and the impact of builds on users and services.</p></li><li><p><strong>Reliability &amp; livesite</strong> — Act as an expert DRI on rotational on-call; establish playbooks, standardized processes, postmortems, telemetry, and SLA adherence; lead efforts to reduce incident volume.</p></li><li><p><strong>Engineering excellence</strong> — Oversee tooling, CI/CD automation, and compliance (security, privacy, safety, accessibility); keep the team's skills current; build partnerships across the Microsoft engineering ecosystem.</p></li></ul></div><br><br><b>Qualifications</b><br><p><strong>Required Qualifications:</strong></p><div><ul><li>Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND solid technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python<ul><li>OR equivalent experience.</li></ul></li><li>Extensive industry experience developing enterprise grade software. </li><li>Some experience managing engineering teams, delivering high quality software for customers. </li><li>Familiarity with building applications and services in the Cloud.</li><li>Knowing Microsoft Azure stack is helpful, but not required.  </li></ul></div><div> </div><div><p><strong>Other Requirements:</strong></p><p>Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role.
